Most mechanical wristwatches will experience extreme fluctuations in accuracy when exposed to levels of magnetism above 50-100 Gauss. In the early 1950s, the golden era of scientific discovery was starting to gather pace and, in 1954, Rolex decided to capture this emerging market by releasing a watch for scientists which could resist magnetic fields of up to 1000 Gauss. Although the Milgauss initially received a slightly underwhelming reception and was discontinued for a number of years, it started to gather a cult following and became one of the more sought-after Rolex's, due to its rarity. In response to heightened interest in the Milgauss, Rolex released an updated version with the iconic lightning bolt seconds hand in 2007 and the watch has continued to grow in popularity ever since.
