In early 1962 NASA began its search for the best available watch for their astronauts to wear in space. Of all the chronographs they anonymously purchased only one passed all of their rigorous tests. In a report dated 1st March, 1965, NASA wrote, “Operational and environmental tests have been completed; and, as a result of the test, Omega chronographs have been calibrated and issued to three members of the Gemini Titan III crews.” That Omega chronograph, was of course, the Speedmaster Professional.
However, it wasn’t until July 1969, that the Speedmaster became synonymous with the most dramatic, and perhaps still the greatest, scientific achievement in human history.
This version of the ‘Moonwatch’ really hasn’t changed that much since Neil Armstrong took his “one small step” on the surface of the moon. The manually wound chronograph movement, the hesalite crystal and the tachymetric scale on the bezel are all present and correct. This particular watch, still stickered and unworn, is presented in its original flight case, with additional straps, eyeglass, Speedmaster medallion and full set of paperwork.
